Nepal, the land of the Himalayas, is a dream destination for trekkers and nature enthusiasts. While famous trekking routes like the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit attract countless adventurers, there's a lesser-known gem that's been gaining popularity in recent years – the Mardi Himal trek. Situated in the Annapurna region, this trek offers an off-the-beaten-path experience, taking you through pristine forests, charming villages, and offering jaw-dropping views of the Annapurna and Machapuchare (Fishtail) peaks. Join me on this journey as we explore the hidden beauty of Mardi Himal.

Table of Contents

Nepal, a land of soaring peaks, rugged trails, and unmatched natural beauty, has long been a dream destination for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. Among its many breathtaking trekking destinations, the Mardi Himal trek is a hidden gem that promises a unique and awe-inspiring experience. Nestled in the Annapurna region, this trek offers a mix of lush forests, high alpine meadows, and awe-inspiring mountain vistas.

Is Mardi Himal worth it?

Mardi Himal is a relatively lesser-known trekking destination in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It is named after the Mardi Himal, a 5,587-meter (18,330 feet) high mountain in the southern part of the Annapurna Sanctuary. The Mardi Himal trek is an emerging trekking route, and it offers trekkers a chance to explore pristine forests, traditional villages, and panoramic mountain views in a less-crowded setting compared to more popular treks in the region.

Highlights of the Mardi Himal trek:

  1. Scenic Beauty: The trek offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including the famous Machapuchare (Fishtail) peak. You'll be treated to breathtaking vistas of snow-capped peaks and lush, green landscapes.

  2. Variety of Landscapes: The trail takes you through a diverse range of landscapes, from dense rhododendron and oak forests to alpine meadows and rocky terrains. It's an opportunity to witness Nepal's natural beauty up close.

  3. Cultural Experience: The trek passes through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, providing an insight into the local culture and way of life. You'll have the chance to interact with friendly locals and learn about their customs.

  4. Off-the-Beaten-Path: Mardi Himal is still relatively undiscovered, so you can enjoy the trek in a quieter and less crowded environment compared to more popular routes like the Annapurna Base Camp or Everest Base Camp.

  5. Varied Itinerary: The trek can be completed in about a week, making it a great option for those with limited time. The trekking itinerary usually includes stops at Deurali, Forest Camp, Low Camp, High Camp, and Mardi Himal Base Camp.

  6. High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp: The High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp are the highlights of the trek. From these points, you can enjoy exceptional views of Mardi Himal, Machapuchare, and the Annapurna range.

  7. Wildlife: The region is also home to various wildlife species, and if you're lucky, you may spot some animals and birds along the way.

  8. Seasonal Variation: The best time to undertake the Mardi Himal trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant, and the mountain views are at their best.

Mardi himal trek itinerary 5 days

Day 1: Drive from Pokhara to Kande and commence Trek to Deurali

An early morning drive takes us to Kande, where our trek officially commences. The trail leads us through lush rhododendron and oak forests. The serene surroundings and occasional glimpses of the valley below make the trek enjoyable. We reach Deurali, our first overnight stop, as the sun sets behind the Machapuchare peak, casting a golden glow over the landscape.

Day 2: Deurali to Forest Camp

The forest becomes denser as we continue our ascent. The melody of chirping birds and the rustling of leaves create a soothing soundtrack for our journey. Forest Camp, our second overnight stop, is nestled amidst the woods, providing a tranquil escape from the world.

Day 3: Forest Camp to Low Camp

Today, the landscape changes dramatically as we ascend to Low Camp. The forest gradually thins out, unveiling magnificent views of Mardi Himal and Machapuchare. Low Camp is a welcome sight, offering warm teahouses where we rest for the night.

Day 4: Low Camp to High Camp

The trail becomes steeper and more rugged as we ascend to High Camp. With each step, the Annapurna Range grows more captivating. High Camp, our highest point on this trek, is perched on the edge of the mountain, offering breathtaking panoramic vistas.

Day 5: High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp and Back

Today is the pinnacle of our adventure as we hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp. The terrain changes from alpine meadows to rocky slopes, and the surreal view of Mardi Himal and the surrounding peaks is simply awe-inspiring. We savor this moment before descending to High Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Day 6: Descend to Siding Village

We bid farewell to the high altitudes and descend through the forest to reach Siding Village. This traditional Gurung village welcomes us with open arms. We explore the local culture and enjoy a peaceful evening by the campfire.

Day 7: Trek to Lumre and Drive to Pokhara

Our trek concludes as we walk to Lumre and catch a ride back to Pokhara. It's a bittersweet ending to an unforgettable journey. The memories we've made and the beauty we've witnessed will stay with us forever.

Mardi Himal is a fantastic trek for those looking to explore the beauty of the Himalayas in a quieter and less commercialized setting. As with any trek in Nepal, it's essential to be prepared, physically fit, and aware of the necessary permits and regulations before embarking on this adventure.

The Mardi Himal trek is a hidden treasure that showcases the natural and cultural wonders of Nepal. It's a journey that takes you off the beaten path, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of the Himalayas. If you're seeking a unique trekking experience in Nepal, I highly recommend adding the Mardi Himal trek to your bucket list. The pristine landscapes and breathtaking views are sure to leave a lasting impression on your heart.
